I mean… is there just like a Racist Surplus store?

Costume shops maybe? Either way…they need to stop

Headdresses? Like scarfs and shit?

Like Native American headdresses

and BTW it’s the…

Note my post after that one. A lot of religious symbols are used, and commercialized. It’s an article of clothing, it’s something you wear on your god damn head. It’s basically a hat.

The Eye of Rah, Buddha, Celtic crosses, all of these things have deeply rooted religious meanings to them. But you see that shit printed on everything, and people have no problem touting it about, while having no concept of their actual meanings. It is not racist to wear an article of clothing. If you look at the post I made before my last, you’ll see at first I had not a single clue what they meant by head dress. I included the response to a feather head dress as the end. I wasn’t diverting from the main theme, I was expressing a point that it is just clothing.

It’s a hat. It’s just a hat, and a gorgeous one at that. Do you like pretty hats? Do you sometimes where something, or own something that you may not know the real meaning too? Are you a racist because of it? No, you’re wearing a flippin’ hat.

It’s not “Just a hat” though.

Well what if they bought them from Native American Artisans? I had a gorgeous beaded necklace I bought when I was young from a flea market type deal, from a group of native Americans.. is that racist of me? Is it wrong now to wear an article of clothing or jewelry, just because it’s associated with another ethnic group? As long as they aren’t painting their skin red, and wearing an overtly racist costume, I do not see a problem with wearing a headband, or jewelry. I think this is a case of tumblr taking shit too far. There is racist, and there is finding an accessory you think it pretty.

I’m talking about simple headbands, not full feather head dresses, and even so, what is the problem? I’ve worn a drundal, and I’m not German…

Here’s the problem…

it is a fine line to dance when you wear the cultural trappings of another people. Is it true appreciation or an easy way to look exotic?

I think the Title and the follow are Specifically talking about Ads, and art, and whatnot that has white women in native headgear.

“There is racist, and there is finding an accessory you think it pretty.” You’re right, But one also take into account the Significance of the item. I might think yarmulkes are a kick ass fashion statement, but it’s an important cultural/religious item.

that’s the problem. if we’re just talking some necklace you bought from some native amercan flea market, that’s one thing, but I just don’t think that’s what they’re talking about.

I mean it’s a sensitive subject and I mean as a guy with Dreadlocks, II’ve been in the conversation about “cultural appropriation”

Rule of thumb, if it isn’t yours don’t wear it.

I’m not a social justice blogger.
